Revision as of 07:58, 28 November 2025
On Space Station 14, stations operate under abbreviated space law. All crew, passengers, and visitors aboard the station are expected to follow these laws.
Foreign invaders, such as nuclear operatives, ninjas, and pirates, are not protected under space law. Traitors are not foreign invaders so they are usually protected by space law.
Designation of 'sentient being' does not automatically grant protections under Space Law. See the Rules of Engagement for what constitutes proper reasoning to instantly terminate a sentient being.
Crimes and Brig Time:
All crime falls into one of three categories:
- Harm to an Individual: Damage done specifically to individuals or their personal affects.
- Harm to the Station: Structural damage to the station or it’s company provided assets, espionage, theft of company assets.
- Harm to the Company: Policy violations, threats to the chain of command, general disorderly conduct.
If a crime does not strictly fall within crime definitions below, but harm has still been done, security may charge with the generic crime of "Harm against [Individual/Station/Company]" with severity that they feel appropriate to the crime, subject to revision by an available Magistrate or Chief Justice.
Security players will never be in OOC trouble for accidentally giving someone less brig time than necessary, as long as sentencing was done in good faith.
Crimes involving sexual content are not listed. This is because no one should ever be involved in a scene that includes that or worse without their explicit consent and they should never have to hear about it if they didn't consent.
| Harm | Misdemeanor (Warning up to 5m) | Felony (10m) | Grand (20m) | Capital (Trial, 25m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | Harassment, Petty Theft, Brawling | Assault, Felony Theft | Kidnapping, Lethal Assault | Obstruction of Revival, Decorporealization, Mindbreaking |
| Station | Vandalism, Petty Theft, Trespass, Animal Cruelty, Slaughter of a Pet | Secure Trespass, Felony Theft, Sabotage, Murder of a Pet | Grand Theft, Grand Sabotage | Terrorism, Hostage Taking |
| Company | Fearmongering, Hooliganism, Brandishing, Vigilantism, Failure to Comply, Tier-1 Possession | Endangerment, Black Marketeering, Obstruction of Justice, Contempt of Court, Rioting, Unlicensed Surgical Procedure, Tier-2 Possession | Breach of Custody, Grand Endangerment, Abuse of Power, Tier-3 Possession | Sedition |
Brig Time Modifiers
At their discretion and when appropriate, the sentencing officer may apply one conditional modifier from each type to the inmate's brig time as follows:
| Modifier Type | Lesser | Moderate | Major |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intent | Accessory (50%) | Conspiracy (75%) | Attempt (100%) |
| Enhancers | Evading Arrest (Up to +25%) | Resisting Arrest (Up to +50%) | Recidivism (+100%) |
| Deductions | Confession (Up to -25%) | Good Behavior (Up to -50%) | Cooperation (Up to -75%) |
| Circumstantial
Nullifiers |
Compliance (Up to -50%) | Self-Defense, Duress, Accidental (Up to -100%) | Dire Emergency (-100%) |

| Any sentence, if deemed necessary with Magistrate or Captain's Authority | The Magistrate or Captain may summarily place the prisoner in permanent confinement or stasis, without trial, if they believe the situation warrants it. A trial will be held after the shift, at Central Command. This should only be done with uncontainable criminals, overwhelming evidence of grand or capital crimes, or when absolutely necessary for the good of the station. Abusing this authority will have severe repercussions. |
The prisoner may simply get into a cryo pod of their own volition if cooperative, or Security may humanely (if possible) sedate or execute the prisoner, and secure them for transport to Central Command. |
Pressing Charges:
- Any crew member may press charges against any other crew member.
- An individual may be charged of a crime if and only if it can be argued beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused had committed an act in the nature and fashion as described by a particular criminal charge.
- An individual may not be charged of a crime if the target of the crime explicitly declines to charge them, thus making their charges toward that specific victim void and pardoned in their entirety. This does not apply to crimes that effect the station at large, such as Terrorism, theft in general, and sabotage.
- Multiple counts of one crime can be charged.
- For illegal actions against the station abroad, each incident separated by a reasonable period of inaction, lawful conduct, or another crime is interpreted as one count.
- For crimes directly bereaving a person (violent acts, theft of personal property etc.), the same applies in addition to each victim being one count.
- In the case of possession or any incident involving several separate and distinct items, only one count of the most severe charge applies.
- Charges that are a direct escalation of one another in nature cannot be simultaneously held against the perpetrator if they pertain to the same incident and the same victim/item (if applicable). Only the most severe of these charges apply.
