The Den's Server Rules
On Space Station 14, stations operate under abbreviated space law. All crew, passengers, and visitors aboard the station are expected to follow these laws.
<blockquote></blockquote>WARNING: You MUST be at least 18 years of age to play on The Den.

Any user suspected of being under the age of 18 WILL be removed until they are of age.
Foreign invaders, such as nuclear operatives, ninjas, and pirates, are not protected under space law. Traitors are not foreign invaders so they are usually protected by space law.

Intentionally disconnecting, responding with hostility, or refusing to respond when an admin privately messages you in-game will be met with an appeal-only ban. Additionally, abusing the AHelp relay by flooding it with garbage, checking for admins before stating a problem (ex: "hello?", "any admins?"), using it as a chatroom, or sending messages of no substance will result in your removal.
Designation of 'sentient being' does not automatically grant protections under Space Law. See the Rules of Engagement for what constitutes proper reasoning to instantly terminate a sentient being.
Crimes and Brig Time:
All crime falls into one of three categories:

PLEASE DO AHELP FOR QUESTIONS, CONCERNS, OR ISSUES. We do not mind receiving AHelps (we encourage it, even), you are simply requested to state the intention in your first message.
* Harm to an Individual: Damage done specifically to individuals or their personal affects.
* Harm to the Station: Structural damage to the station or it’s company provided assets, espionage, theft of company assets.
* Harm to the Company: Policy violations, threats to the chain of command, general disorderly conduct.
If a crime does not strictly fall within crime definitions below, but harm has still been done, security may charge with the generic crime of "Harm against [Individual/Station/Company]" with severity that they feel appropriate to the crime, subject to revision by an available Magistrate or Chief Justice.

All AHelp messages are relayed to the Den Station Discord.
Security players will never be in OOC trouble for accidentally giving someone less brig time than necessary, as long as sentencing was done in good faith.

We respect player privacy and agency. All chat messages are logged, however subtle, whisper, and SOOC are not viewable/viewed by admins, player ghosts, or otherwise, unless logs relating to an investigation are checked.
Crimes involving sexual content are not listed. This is because no one should ever be involved in a scene that includes that or worse without their explicit consent and they should never have to hear about it if they didn't consent.

The usage of any third-party applications/scripts/client modifications or any other applicable software to gain an advantage, avoid intended game/server mechanics, or to harm server infrastructure is strictly prohibited, as is the abuse of glitches, exploits and bugs. Any and all instances of this will be met with an appeal-only ban.

|Under 25 minutes, or the charges <u>do not</u> include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes.
|Criminal serves their time as normal in the standard brig, with the maximum sentence being 25 minutes. Released upon the expiration of their timer.
|The criminal retains their PDA, headset, and all of their original belongings that are not contraband or evidence of a crime, unless they misuse this right.
|-
|25 minutes or greater, and the charges <u>do</u> include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes.
|A trial must be arranged for the criminal. If the trial cannot take place within 25 minutes of being initially charged, the criminal is released until the trial is possible.
|Same as above. However, if the individual gains a breach of custody charge at any point, or commits additional crime while awaiting trial, they are to be escalated to extended confinement without parole, until their trial is possible.
|-
|40 minutes or greater, and the charges <u>do</u> include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes.
|A trial must be arranged for the criminal, however, until it is available the criminal is to be held in extended confinement.
|Headset and PDA should be changed to prisoner variants. Original belongings may be confiscated at the brigging officer's discretion.
|-
|60 minutes or greater, and the charges <u>do</u> include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes.
|The Head of Security or Captain may summarily place the prisoner in stasis, without trial, if they believe them to be an ongoing threat to the station. A trial will be held after the shift, at Central Command.
|The prisoner may simply get into a cryo pod of their own volition if cooperative, or Security may humanely (if possible) sedate or execute the prisoner, and secure them for transport to Central Command.
|-
|Any sentence, if deemed necessary with Magistrate or Captain's Authority
|The Magistrate or Captain may summarily place the prisoner in permanent confinement or stasis, without trial, if they believe the situation warrants it. A trial will be held after the shift, at Central Command.<br>

If you have any questions about these rules, please use the admin help menu by hitting F1 in-game, or clicking the "AHelp" button in the lobby.
This should only be done with uncontainable criminals, overwhelming evidence of grand or capital crimes, or when absolutely necessary for the good of the station. Abusing this authority will have <u>severe</u> repercussions.
|If sentenced to Permanent Confinement: Headset and PDA should be changed to prisoner variants. Original belongings may be confiscated at the brigging officer's discretion.<br>

Admins hold full discretion with bans, and may ban you if you have been an objectively uncomfortable or unsafe presence. A player that is deemed uncomfortable or unsafe will only be banned via a 65% or higher vote or evidence to support it.
If sentenced to Stasis: The prisoner may simply get into a cryo pod of their own volition if cooperative, or Security may humanely (if possible) sedate or execute the prisoner, and secure them for transport to Central Command.

Community Rules
Pressing Charges:
C1. All of these rules apply as they are intended. Every example of a rule break cannot be defined as written, therefore enforcement of the rules is subject to staff interpretation of the rule's intention.

Any extended discussion regarding interpretation of the rules should be avoided in the AHelp menu and can be instead pursued within the the Den's Discord in the #help channel.
* Any crew member may press charges against any other crew member.
* An individual may be charged of a crime if and only if it can be argued beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused had committed an act in the nature and fashion as described by a particular criminal charge.
* An individual may not be charged of a crime if the target of the crime explicitly declines to charge them, thus making their charges toward that specific victim void and pardoned in their entirety. This does not apply to crimes that effect the station at large, such as Terrorism, theft in general, and sabotage.
* Multiple counts of one crime can be charged.
* For illegal actions against the station abroad, each incident separated by a reasonable period of inaction, lawful conduct, or another crime is interpreted as one count.
* For crimes directly bereaving a person (violent acts, theft of personal property etc.), the same applies in addition to each victim being one count.
* In the case of possession or any incident involving several separate and distinct items, only one count of the most severe charge applies.
* Charges that are a direct escalation of one another in nature cannot be simultaneously held against the perpetrator if they pertain to the same incident and the same victim/item (if applicable). Only the most severe of these charges apply.

C2. The Den is an English-based community; use English as your primary method of communication within the game.
Charges by Definition
<blockquote><nowiki/>'Individual/Individual' represents all crew, passengers, and visitors aboard the station who are protected under NT Space Law.</blockquote>

C3. Erotic Roleplay (ERP), erotic content, and 18+ sexual content are allowed, so long that all parties involved consent to it.

C4. Be civil:
Modifiers by Definition
Sentencing modifiers are to be applied by the sentencing officer, judge, or arbiter. Aggravating modifiers may not extend a sentence beyond the specified limit, while extenuating modifiers may not reduce a sentence below the specified limit.

C4.1 Do not spam or advertise in our server.
Intent Qualifiers - Code.- XXX-NXX
C4.2 Do not flame and do not be toxic.
Accessory
Any Individual/Individuals found guilty of assisting in the commission of a crime, without participating in the crime itself, knowing that a crime will be, has been, or is being committed, will receive up to 50% of the standard sentence for the crimes in which they took part. Code. -XXX-N01

C4.3 Be polite and respectful towards other members, and avoid making others uneasy or uncomfortable.
Conspiracy
Any Individual/Individuals found guilty of planning to commit a crime, with the intent to carry out said crime eventually, and having committed an overt act pursuant to that end, will receive up to 75% of the standard sentence for the crimes which they conspired to commit. Code. -XXX-N02

C4.4 DO NOT BE AN ASSHOLE. Do not intentionally make the round worse for other people for your own amusement.
Attempts
Any Individual/Individuals found guilty of attempting to commit a crime, with the intent to carry out that crime, will receive the sentence for the crimes they attempted in full. Code. -XXX-N03

For example: repeatedly and persistently harassing a character without OOC consent, being an intense nuisance to the quiet of the station, or causing substantial damage through vandalism unless valid under antagonist rules.
Enhancers - Code.- XXX-EXX
We especially have no tolerance for taking things out-of-character. Please separate in-character and out-of-character, and let people know if you're uncomfortable with the actions taken. If the request is ignored or unfollowed despite knowing they heard you, please contact an administrator.
Evading Arrest
Any Individual found to be intentionally evading an arrest after being ordered to stop by members of security or command will be charged with at most 125% of the original sentence after adding any other modifiers. Code XXX-E01. Charge: 25% increase

C4.5 We have a zero tolerance policy for any form of bigotry, discrimination, toxicity, and unconsensual harassment. Failure to comply with this rule will result in community removal.
Resisting Arrest
Any Individual found to be forcefully resisting an arrest will be charged with at most 150% of the original sentence after adding any other modifiers. Code XXX-E02. Charge: 50% increase

Slurs are also strictly prohibited.
Recidivism
Any Individual convicted of the same criminal charge multiple times within one shift will receive an additional modifier of, at most, 200% of the original sentence. Code. -XXX-E03. Charge: 100% increase or upgrade to a capital crime if one of the conditions are fulfilled.

C4.6 For anything else that is not specifically covered by our rules: use common sense and common decency.
Conditions for upgrading to a capital crime:

Game Server Rules
# Malicious intent is proven.
R0. Our server prioritizes roleplay over rules.
# Clear intent to continue to commit felony or greater crimes.

R0.1 If you have a valid, logical, and well-roleplayed in-character reason for actions that break a server rule, you may be forgiven for your rulebreak IF the rule has "Follows rule 0" under it.
Deductions - Code.- XXX-DXX
R0.2 As an example, you may kill a person who killed your partner, so long as it is a one-attempt situation.
Confession
Any individual who immediately and completely confesses, and pleads guilty to their crime at the earliest opportunity to do so may have their sentence reduced by up to 25%. Code. -XXX-D01

R0.3 This rule applies only until after your first attempt in applying it. For example, if you fail to kill the person who killed your partner, you are to stop all attempts at playing out rule 0.
Good Behavior
Any individual who peacefully and fully complies with the authorities, turns oneself in, displays clear signs of remorse concerning the committed crime, and/or conducts themselves peacefully while imprisoned may have their sentence reduced by up to 50%, or be paroled from extended confinement as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedures. Code. -XXX-D02

R0.4 This rule requires consent in most situations. If you fail to ask for consent from the other party or parties, the rules violations will be taken as they are. This INCLUDES onlookers.
Cooperation
Any Individual/Individuals who shares actionable intelligence with the authorities, testifies against accomplices, and otherwise fully aids station security and the prosecution, may have their sentence reduced by up to 75% of the original sentence. Code. -XXX-D03.

(Note that if you do not ask in an AHelp whether something requires consent, assume it does require consent.)
Circumstantial Nullification - Code.- XXX-CXX
R0.5 This rule can be enacted with informed OOC consent. You must make your intent clear, so that the consenting party knows and understands the full extent of your requested actions. Otherwise, you require admin permission via AHelp.
Compliance
Any individual found to have committed a crime or crimes while following what they believed to be a lawful order may have their sentence reduced by up to 50%. Code. -XXX-C01

R0.6 You may, at any point, request through ahelp to receive something that would help in these scenarios. Asking to be set to a traitor, a thief, or any other antagonist role for a scenario in which only the involved, consenting parties are/will be affected is perfectly fine.
Accidental
Any individual found to have committed a crime or crimes purely by accident, despite taking reasonable precautions relevant to the situation, may have their sentence reduced by any amount, or completely waived. Code. -XXX-C02

Examples of Rule 0
Duress
Any individual found to have committed a crime at the insistence of someone else, while under immediate threat or duress, may have their sentence reduced by any amount, or completely waived. Code. -XXX-C03

# GOOD USAGE: You ask in OOC (discord or in-game) to kill someone's character and get their consent explicitly. You ask to be given traitor in order to perform this action, committing and going through with it. All involved have fun as there were no extreme circumstances and involved parties gave consent.
Self-Defense
# BAD USAGE: You do not ask in OOC for consent nor do you AHelp. You, as a non-antag, kill someone without asking them or admins prior. This is bad and results in punitive measures.
Any Individual/Individuals found to have committed a crime or crimes in protection of oneself or another, and only to the necessary extent required to avert a direct and imminent threat to the health and life of innocent persons, may have their sentence reduced by any amount or completely waived. Code. -XXX-C04
# GOOD USAGE: You ask in AHelp to commit minor amounts of thievery, such as stealing people's non-important items, asking people involved for their consent or only taking from those you know you have consent with.
# BAD USAGE: You do the same as above and a player makes a complaint due to missing something important or being upset by the inconvenience. This is bad and will fall onto you.
# GOOD USAGE: You ask in an AHelp if your security character can break SOP and destroy critical evidence linking their friend to a crime. Given permission, you go through with the SOP breach, and if it's discovered, accept being reprimanded in-character/tried by a magistrate judge.
# BAD USAGE: You ask a player OOC if your character can kill theirs because they were a witness to your character's crime. The other player agrees to having their character killed, and you go through with the act, killing them and throwing their body into space, ensuring they cannot be found. However, since the player did not agree to being round-removed, and you did it anyways, you are punished accordingly.
# In general, just AHelp and ask. We encourage all players to AHelp with questions as we can simply answer them from discord. In most situations, we can also get consent for you so they do not know anything. AHelps exist not just to report, but to question, and we encourage you to use the feature freely. (F1)

R1. Follow the server expectations:
Dire Emergency
R1.1 If you are banned from a role or department, you may not play that role. This includes seeking or accepting promotions into roles you are banned from.
Any Individual/Individuals found to have committed a crime in the process of absolutely necessary and reasonable actions, taken with the intent to resolve or mitigate the effects of a dire emergency on one’s vessel or habitat, shall have their sentence completely waived. Code. -XXX-C05

You also may not play Warden or a Dignitary role if you are command banned.
Sentence Types and Procedure
R1.2 Do not make yourself a major problem, annoyance or disruption for the crew while not being an antagonist (i.e. self-antagging). Intentionally hindering the station as a crew-aligned character is strictly against our rules. There can be exceptions if this behavior is not constant, but it should always be for the sake of roleplay, not for the sake of antagonizing.
Standard
R1.3 Department strikes (e.g. cargonia and any variation thereof), riots, cults, and any other type of similar largely disruptive behavior are to be roleplayed excellently and require explicit administrator pre-approval.
Temporary Confinement
Placing the convict into a temporary holding cell to serve predetermined sentence.

R1.4 Clowns, Mimes, and other "prankster" roles do not get an exemption from the above, and should NOT use their job as an excuse to be a major disturbance.
Catch & Release
Taking the convict to Security, processing them, searching them, and then releasing them.

R1.5 AFK (a.k.a. SSD) and catatonic players are considered to have the same rights as any other crewmate. Do not intentionally harm or directly steal from the inventory of known SSD or catatonic crew without prior consent. Exceptions can be made if the action is taken to protect the SSD person or others during emergency situations.
Demotion
Downgrading the convict’s employment contract and revoking their access accordingly, with permission from or when ordered by the convict’s head of department. May be applied when the convict has committed a crime relating to their employment within their department or with NanoTrasen as a whole.

R1.6 If a player is dead and catatonic (not SSD), they are not required to be revived and should be stored in the morgue.
License restriction
Downgrading or suspending the convict’s armament license and confiscating possessions accordingly. May be applied when the convict is guilty of possession or a crime involving a weapon they were lawfully permitted to carry.

R1.7 You should not biomass grind dead and catatonic crew, unless the body belongs to a person who got cloned (thus, recycling is allowed), or during an emergency.
Psionic Suppression
Temporary suppression of the convict’s psionic power by use of Cryptobiolin or psionic insulation. May be applied when the convict is guilty of a crime in which they use psionics.

R1.8 If a player is alive and catatonic, they may be brought to their relevant department or cryostorage as necessary.
Capital
Including charges totaling 60 minutes or greater, when the charges include resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes, or capital crimes. Lethal punishment should only be considered if Extended Confinement is unreasonable or unsustainable, due to external factors or the inherent threat caused by a convict.

R1.9 For the sake of privacy and respect towards the other members of the community, livestreaming rounds to a public audience is strictly forbidden. Livestreaming to a small private audience, such as to a friend, or within a channel on The Den's discord, is permitted.
Extended Confinement
Placing the convict into the brig until the end of the shift, where they are to be transported to Central Command for processing. The convict has the same rights as any other prisoner within the brig, whether they arrived by transport at start of shift or were sentenced to Extended Confinement.

R1.10 It is strictly forbidden to record or stream players engaged in private activities without their consent, and even more so to share it without their consent.
Exfiltration
Immediate retrieval of the convict via a CentComm or GALPOL dispatched transport. The prisoner may be held in a temporary cell until the transport arrives. If a transport cannot be arranged, default to other capital sentences.

R1.11 Ghosting or playing with the intent of, and the act itself of "exposing" or shaming players by sharing content or information of their presence or activities in this server elsewhere, is strictly forbidden.
Execution
Termination of the convict’s life without the intent of future resurrection. Whenever any execution is performed, regardless of trial or not, a general announcement must be made detailing who was executed and for what reason.

R1.12 You are expected to be able to keep things in-character. If you do not like actions taken or words said by a character, please inform them. Contact an administrator immediately if the individual is ignoring or not following your requests. If a player asks you to stop, you act like nothing happened, apologize, and move on.
The convict may select from one of four methods of execution, depending on availability:

R1.13 You are expected to follow "real human escalation" if you are not an antagonist. Use common sense; if someone hits you, rule 0 does not apply and you cannot murder them.
* Firing Squad
* Lethal Injection
* Electric Shock
* Asphyxiation.

R2. Follow metagaming guidelines:
If the convict does not make a choice after being given ample opportunity, the sentencing officer or other relevant authority may select the method that is most appropriate.
R2.1 Do not use the Emote channel to bypass an inability to speak.

R2.2 Use of the emote channel to simulate character death rattles or other game mechanics is prohibited in a situation where it would give you an advantage, such as combat.
Convicts may request alternate methods of execution that may be approved or denied at the discretion of the individual passing the sentence. The executed corpse must be burned, stored in the morgue, or processed by medical staff using the biomass reclaimer.<blockquote>Execution should only be considered for highly destructive, dangerous individuals who have caused immense damage, or who continue to pose a danger to the station. A player must consent before their body is burned, placed in the biomass reclaimer, or otherwise rendered permanently unrevivable.</blockquote>

R2.3 Use the local-out-of-character (LOOC) and global out-of-character (OOC) channels properly. Don't speak of in-character matters in those channels unless you're asking questions related to ingame concepts
Preservative Stasis
Termination of the convict’s life with the expressed intent to perform a resurrection once the convict's body can be secured at Central Command. The convict's body is to be stored within a morgue or similar controlled and regulated environment to ensure the body does not rot or be destroyed.

R2.4 Do not use in-character channels to bypass a lack of ability to use OOC/LOOC chats (e.g. "Huh, wonder where the captain went? OOC He probably left to get dinner lol").
Decorporealisation
Stripping the convict’s mind from their body into a more restricting form such as borgification.<blockquote>Decorporealisation should only be considered for highly destructive, dangerous individuals who have caused immense damage, or who continue to pose a danger to the station. A player must consent before they are decorporealized.</blockquote>

R2.5 Do not use any information gained by meta-communication (i.e. using external channels to communicate with other players in the same game) to your advantage.
Mindbreaking
Removal of the convict’s psionic power by use of Mindbreaker Toxin or any other means. May be applied when the convict is guilty of a capital crime in which they use psionics.<blockquote>Mindbreaking should only be considered for highly destructive, dangerous individuals who have caused immense damage, or who continue to pose a danger to the station. Some individuals may experience severe long term side effects.</blockquote>

R2.6 Discussion about the current round is allowed on the Den Station Discord server (albeit discouraged for the purpose of MRP). However, acting on information gained by this method is strictly forbidden.
Pilotage Law
All pilots, trained or otherwise, of non-foreign invader shuttles are expected to follow pilotage law. Pilots not aligned with or hired by NT are required to announce their dock with the station. Pilots must fly slowly and exercise caution when docking. Pilots shall not use their vessel to intentionally ram or crash into another vessel or station.

R2.7 You are allowed to have knowledge of past experiences and prior shifts, and players are allowed to have in-character relationships (friends, enemies, or otherwise). This rules follows rule 0.
Captain's Authority
Please see Captain's Authority within the Command Hierarchy page.
R2.8 Antagonists in previous rounds must not be treated differently due to their prior antagonist status. Notwithstanding, confession of crimes committed in a prior shift are still admissible in court.

R2.9 For the sake of continuity, your character will never have permanently died in previous rounds (unless you wish to roleplay this concept out).

R2.10 Do NOT "antag roll." This is the act of joining rounds for the purpose of seeing if you have received an antagonist role, and leaving soon after if not.

R2.11 Act like an actual person on a space station, and don’t use text speech or emoticons when speaking in character.

Examples of acceptable metaknowledge include:

# Knowing that holo fibers are usually used by thieves;
# Referring to certain antagonists as "thief" or "nukie" is reasonable, given the difficulty of separation.

Examples of unacceptable metaknowledge include:

# Knowing about the existence of the Syndicate Listening Outpost before it is either discovered or announced;
# Knowing that a thief is a pacifist before they share that information with you, or the implant is discovered.
# Checking every PDA for an uplink without a valid RP reason to do so.
# Taking someone's "black gloves" without the metashield lift condition being met. (finding any holofibers proven to be related to the person)

R3. Follow new-life rules:
R3.1 If a player dies and is brought back by way of cloning or borging, they forget the last five minutes leading up to their death and cannot describe who or what killed them. Note that death is inclusive of an IPC fully losing charge.

R3.2 Players that are revived by using a defibrillator can only recall vague details about their death, such as "Someone shot me" or "I was set ablaze" but they cannot recall details beyond that. Please report players who break this rule.

R3.3 In either case, characters do not have any knowledge of what happened while they were dead (i.e. ghosted/observing), and are forbidden from acting on information gained during death.

R4. Follow naming conventions:
R4.1 Keep any media references to a minimum, don’t make obvious puns or plays on words, and try to be creative by picking a believable and fitting species name, character first name, character pronouns, and/or surname. Do not make obvious references to media in terms of character appearance. Leeway for names is given to theatrical roles such as the clown, boxer, and mime; these roles are allowed stage names with some freedom.

R4.2 If you are using a title, DO NOT attempt to use it to gain unfair gameplay advantages (such as, pretending to be a Central Command officer, or some role/job you are not).

R5. Follow roleplay guidelines:
R5.1 Your character is a separate entity from you, the player. Your character's actions, feelings, and knowledge in-game should be based solely on the character's experiences rather than your own as the player. You should also prevent yourself from hurting due to what happens in-character. Failing to separate IC and OOC relationships, actions, or otherwise may result in a ban for being an uncomfortable presence.

R5.2 Do not escalate situations needlessly. Very few things are deserving of a fight to the death, or the loss of life of somebody. Brawls and self defense are permitted, but do NOT put someone in critical state without a VERY valid reason to it (roleplay-based or not).

R5.3 If a fight results in someone being critically injured, seek medical help for them - and if they die, do not destroy or otherwise hide their body. This falls under self-antagonistic behavior.

Follows rule 0.

R5.4 Do NOT grief, attack or kill crew-aligned ghost roles such as familiars or station pets without a valid motive or provocation. Pest ghost roles such as mice however, are always fair game for attacking.

Follows rule 0.

R5.5 Some awakened pest roles (e.g. sentient mothroach) may be considered crew pets and fall under this rule.

R5.6 Respect other people's consent, dignity, and boundaries. If somebody asks you to stop bothering them LOOC, do so without question. If someone keeps bothering you despite telling them off LOOC, please AHelp it.

R5.7 Non-security personnel should not seek to kill or detain unrelated threats, unless they themselves or other crew in the direct vicinity are in current, immediate danger from it. Crew may neutralize threats when they present themselves or if they are relevant to the crew member in question, but are not to pursue them if and once routed from their current area.

Follows rule 0.

R5.8 Certain severe emergencies or antagonist roles allow for normal crew to actively defend station and attempt to kill or subdue the antagonist. Such as: nuclear operatives, a zombie outbreak, a space dragon attack, or any other critical situation (such as all Command or/and Security being dead) requiring the crew to take matters in their own hands.

R5.9 By picking the prisoner role, you have chosen to roleplay as a prisoner, NOT an antagonist, and should not act so in any capacity. While you may be allowed to escape, you must receive admin approval to do so, and ideally you should only seek to do so with excellent reasoning and roleplay (e.g. abusive security personnel or badly damaged permanent brig). You may not unnecessarily antagonize security personnel continuously or without valid, extremely good RP reasoning.

Lack of administrator response does not constitute approval.

R5.10 Try to avoid engaging in public roleplay (both verbal or/and in action) that may make other people overly uneasy or uncomfortable. Public meant as in: any communications channel or medium other than whisper, or any overt actions or emotes in actual public physical locations.

This rule covers all extreme or sensitive topics. Extreme or sensitive topics explicitly includes all erotic content, any form of self harm, graphic descriptions of violent or horror content, and also includes anything that would be objectively uncomfortable for a majority of the server population. If there is any doubt, always make sure you have the consent of everyone who would be exposed to the content.

While it may make sometimes for amazing roleplay, not everybody may have the sensitivity to be able to hear your character recanting some dark, depressing tale or to see them doing something inherently twisted or disturbing. You can find more on this in the ERP Rules and Guidelines section.

R5.11 Any action that may need another player's consent is expected to have said consent beforehand. A couple examples of behavior that would require implicit or explicit prior consent before doing it include:

- Putting something in someone else's drink. (including bodily fluids/products)

- Putting someone to sleep or injecting someone with chemicals.

If you thought you had implicit consent and end up being wrong, you will be treated as breaching consent. Antagonists with the character as an objective are exempt from this rule so long as the intent is solely to complete the objective and is not sexual in nature.

R5.12 The advertise channel is for advertising. All responses to an advertisement should be made via common, especially any joke comments. Keep it to its intended purposes of getting your roleplay scenario the attention you want it to.

R5.13 The Den is an adult-only server, and thus we allow certain adult-specific topics. You are allowed to make suggestive or otherwise sexual jokes or comments, so long as it is not in a flirty manner to those who don't consent and/or they aren't too over the top.

As an example, you should not be describing doing explicit sexual acts to people over radio. This rule only applies in-character.

R5.14 Continuing 5.13, you are also allowed to make jokes or comments that are non-sexual like murder threats, acts of violence, et cetera, so long as you don't go too far or it's non-specific. This does not protect speech involving extreme or sensitive topics.

Protected speech includes:

* "I'm going to commit murder" with a context that couldn't be linked to specific people.
* "There is a pipebomb in your mailbox"
This rule only applies in-character.

R5.15 Do not rejoin the round as the same character in a different role after cryoing mid-shift, unless that role is passenger or you have solid, logical reasoning under the conditions outlined below:

* You have approval from the Department Head in question.
* You are not wanted by security.
* You have faxed and informed CC that you will be taking the role.
* Only applies to Command and Dignitary roles: You have received permission from CC to take the role.

R6. Follow powergaming guidelines:
R6.1 Don't rush for or prepare equipment unrelated to your job for no purpose other than to have it without valid reason.

R6.2 A medical doctor does not need insulated gloves, the Head of Personnel does not need a gun, and the Captain does not need an assault rifle. If you, in your given role, require an item that does not fall within your job’s usual parameters, have a VERY valid gameplay or roleplay reason to obtain and keep it.

This does not apply to surgery for organs as they, in most circumstances, don't provide more than QOL features since the removal of the cobra gland from spawning. See Medical Operating Procedures for in-character requirements.

R6.3 Manufacturing weapons, bombs, or deadly poisons before you know of any reason you would need them for (or without an excellent roleplay reason to it) is powergaming behavior.

R6.4 Hiding Traitor objective items, or preemptively securing them with higher security than usually required or than would make logical sense, violates our powergaming and roleplay guidelines.

R6.5 Do NOT, under any circumstances, hide the nuclear fission explosive, authentication disk, or other sensitive items in an impossible to see/access location.

This includes thieves, in which case your objective should not be the nuke at all.

R6.6 While it is allowed for the crew to know the details around the various antagonist functions (traitor items being such, PDAs having uplinks, listening posts existing, etc.), Security is strictly forbidden from acting on that information without valid reason and suspicion, and it is always to presume innocence until proven guilty.

For example, it is to be avoided to check PDAs, implants and headsets unless the person is strongly suspected to be a syndicate agent, and there is evidence to back this up.

R7. Follow end-of-round (EOR) rules:
R7.1 End-of-round-griefing (EORG) is not allowed. This includes but is not limited to attacking, destroying, polluting, killing, severely injuring, or using detrimental psionics against anyone on the evacuation shuttle or at Central Command. Once you board the evac shuttle, all antagonistic activity, theft, destruction, and mechanical combat is done for the round. This includes all roles.

R7.2 Explosives and strategies with capacity for high collateral damage should not be used on or around the evacuation shuttle. This includes artifacts, which are not to intentionally activate their nodes enroute to, or at CC, including the evac shuttle.

R8. Follow consent guidelines and rules:
For clarity, public is anywhere with an even remote chance someone could walk in without a door remote. If it is possible for someone to enter, it is public.

R8.1 Be very mindful of In Character and Out of Character consent, as they are NOT the same thing. Whilst a player may agree for their character to be subjected to a nonconsensual act, engaging in ERP with someone against their OOC consent is strictly forbidden. This applies both to actual player characters, and ghost role characters, people and creatures.

If your OOC consent is not respected, immediately contact an administrator and remove yourself from the situation.

R8.2 Extreme acts such as killing, severely maiming, nonconning, abuse, or even round removal are allowed, so long that all the participants consented OOC.

R8.3 Keep in mind that by performing actions without IC consent (or actions that go against space law), you are not immune to and will be opening yourself to IC punishment. Expect to be potentially apprehended, prosecuted and sentenced to the full extent of the law, if found to have committed the crime you did. By doing non-consensual acts IC, you fully agree to being subject to rule 0 which may include your characters death.

R8.4 Try to make ABUNDANTLY clear in your consent menu essential information such as whether you are interested in ERP or not, your limits and preferences, your OOC stance on nonconsensual acts towards your character, your OOC or/and IC stance on extreme acts such as death or maiming, and so on so forth.

R8.5 DO NOT use ERP as bait, unless done with OOC consent of all parties involved. Much as it would be very believable and make for some amazing roleplay for an Agent to try and seduce a target into the bedroom to then murder them in cold blood on the spot or kidnap them, priority is given to the fun, comfort and enjoyment of all players.

After the ERP is complete, a grace period of 5 minutes is in effect, during which you are still NOT allowed to kill the target.

R8.6 Do not hog a role or a job if you do not plan to at least engage in a few of its activities and basic responsibilities in the first place. This goes especially for Command and Security roles and jobs, and especially during a crisis or emergency.

If your intent is exclusively to ERP, then take a role or a job that won't potentially lead to the station being unable to function properly. You can slack and go MiA now and then; but ideally, ERP should not take priority over basic job responsibilities and during emergencies.

To be more specific, this meaning: do not go missing from minute one, not even bother to answer radio calls, only to pop back up when the emergency shuttle arrives. And ideally, if an emergency comes up, try to go and help, if the nature of the emergency is related to your job or role.

However, so long it is roleplayed well enough and there is no immediate urgency, leeway is given (so long you are ready to face the IC consequences to this). Much larger leeway is given during Extended and Greenshift rounds, due to their nature of being meant specifically for people to relax and get off.

Command roles are never allowed to be unresponsive due to ERP; you are required to have your headset and be reachable through communications at all times.

R8.7 Do not spam or pollute radio channels (including the telepath channel) with smut or content that would require consent to post. Mind you, this does NOT mean that you are not allowed to speak or discuss of such. Just that it should not become a cringy spamfest of people shitposting/hornyposting.

Or in other words: try not to turn them into the equivalent of a bathroom stall. Have at least a minimum bit of decency and respect towards other people.

R8.8 Do not go overboard with hornyposting about a specific person if said person does not have access to the channel they are being spoken about in, and if you don't have OOC consent from said person to do so.

Pushing it too far, can easily result in what is effectively sexual harassment, and be something very degrading, objectifying and humiliating to the person.

R8.9 Do not engage in nor discuss extreme or sensitive topics in public. Public meant as in: any communications channel or medium other than whisper, or any overt actions or emotes in actual public physical locations.

What you like to do in the privacy of your bedroom is your business and prerogative, but do not force other people into having to witness or hear of something exceptionally outrageous that would turn the stomach of any ordinary person, or at the very least make them extremely uncomfortable.

Or in other words: respect other people's boundaries and tastes.

R8.10 Do not kinkshame somebody for something that they might be into, no matter how extreme, with the exception that they are into being kinkshamed, or you are doing so in a playful, jokey, friendly manner for banter that they consent to.

Again, respect other people's boundaries and tastes.

R8.11 Use the subtle (a chat message prefixed with -) command if you are engaging in ERP involving extreme kinks. The regular emote * action can be heard through walls. While this normally does not pose a major issue, unless you mind your privacy, it can become one if you are potentially exposing passerbys to your acts.

R8.12 Roleplaying a character as underage is strictly forbidden. So is talk of such activities.

R8.13 Engaging in ERP with a creature who does not pass the harkness test is forbidden. The conditions of which are as follows:

# must be an adult in their species,
# must be sapient (or higher) intelligence,
# must be capable of communicating consent

This includes any non-cognizine animal, xeno, and/or other controllable mobs. Additionally, even if a creature passes these tests, they must not enter areas marked by NSFW holobarriers. (See: rule C3.2)

R8.14 Do not engage in public ERP, period. Public meant as in: any communications channel or medium other than whisper, or any overt actions or emotes in actual public physical locations (including areas of confinement such as the permabrig and the normal brig), or doing so on camera.

As a note, maintenance is considered a public area. 8.14 also applies if you are able to be seen in a way that would objectively make someone think of ERP.

This rule is only applied when someone who did not consent to hearing/seeing manages to do so. In such a case, you are entirely at fault, but otherwise it is not a rulebreak.

R8.14.1 Characters playing as the prisoner role are barred from ERP while within the role, due to the potential for consent violations, longstanding policy, and admin comfort.

R8.15 Do not, under any circumstance, subject anyone to descriptions of a scene they did not consent to hearing about.

R8.16 No recording private scenes or conversations using the tape recorder item without consent. In addition, you may not play the recording of private scenes or conversations without consent of all listening in advance.

A private conversation is anything that is said in whisper and isn't to be used in court. Upon being interrogated by a detective as a prisoner or otherwise, you automatically consent to them using the recording in court and as evidence.

R8.17 Privacy or NSFW holobarriers must be used to indicate that a room is being used for a private scene involving topics that require consent to view. You may choose to leave access to the room open (unbolted doors) and explain what people should expect to find inside on the text of the holobarrier, or you may additionally bolt the door to indicate that others are not welcome to enter. Do not breach a bolted door with a privacy or NSFW holobarrier on it for any reason without explicit admin permission.

Psionics
P1   - Players that have psionic powers are allowed to use them at-will to accomplish their roleplay goals. It should be noted that in-character consequences can happen as a result of their use, including being stripped of psionic powers or even death.

P2  - As a mantis, it is not your goal to hunt down psionics. Do not mindbreak others against their will solely because they have psionic powers.

Command, Dignitary, and Security Rules:
H1. Follow Command, Dignitary, and Security Guidelines:

H1.1 Security, Dignitaries, and Command roles are expected to know and perform their jobs to the best of their ability, and to have extensive knowledge in regards to the duties, management and operations of their departments. These roles often heavily impact the round and require careful and conscientious roleplay.

As such, their roleplay quality is held to a much higher standard, especially in the event a player was to play a character in such a role committing a crime or being disruptive.

If you cannot meet these requirements, do NOT take these roles.

H1.2 Command, Dignitaries, and Security are required to read and follow The Den's Space Law, Standard Operating Procedures, Alert Procedure, and Company Policy to the best of their ability.

Following these documents follows rule 0.

H1.3 Abusing your position or using it to make arbitrary or obviously malicious choices to the detriment of the entire station and/or its inhabitants is prohibited.

Follows rule 0.

H1.4 Some leeway is given to Security, Dignitary, and Command roles doings things such as committing a crime, slacking, or being irresponsible, so long that the player is ready to be met with the very serious in-character consequences to such actions, so long it’s roleplayed exceptionally well, and so long what’s being done is not too disruptive or harmful in nature to other players.

H1.5 An aggravating exemplary factor should be considered when sentencing or applying IC punishment to a Security or Command role, in reason of them not acting appropriately to the expected IC standards of their role.

H1.6 If you need to leave the round, please notify administrators via the AHelp menu and notify your fellow crew via departmental radio. If you have the capability to do so, ensure that you return your items as necessary and seek cryostorage if you are not planning on returning.

H1.7 Do not hire random crew to be your bodyguard(s) or promote random crewmembers to Command positions at random. If you require bodyguards or security details, talk to the Security department. If you need new Command staff, talk to the personnel in that related department.

H1.8 Security should always try to use non-lethals and arrest criminals, unless given extreme circumstances, such as but not limited to: lethal force being used against them, their life or that of an innocent being in immediate danger, no other reasonable option being available at the moment to detain an unreasonably dangerous threat, or when facing off against station-destroying antagonists (nuclear operatives, zombies, dragons, etc.).

Follows rule 0.

H1.9 Security may choose to confiscate dangerous items (weapons, firearms) as well as items used to commit crimes or items that could prove to be problematic when in possession of the detainee (tools, insulated gloves, etc.), so long that there is a valid, strong reason and suspicion that such items will be used maliciously, or evidence that they have been used to commit a crime.

H1.10 When lethal force is used by Security, they are expected when and if possible to patch up the critical condition detained individual back to health, or even to life in the event of death, by cloning or defibbing.

Follows rule 0.

H1.11 Punishment should be proportional to the crime committed and the danger posed by the criminal. You cannot execute somebody just for trespassing or stealing an item, but a provable Syndicate Agent going loud and round removing somebody, should absolutely warrant an execution.

H1.12 Brig times should generally not exceed 25 minutes unless the crime is permabriggable, and permabrigging is to be done exclusively for proven criminals and exceptional cases (usually, unreasonably dangerous individuals).

H1.13 Executions and permanent Do Not Revive orders can only be carried out for capital crimes, and are to be used sparingly as last resorts, or in the most extreme of situations and crimes. For example, when the detained individual is proven beyond any reasonable doubt to be an unreasonably hard to contain or/and major threat to the station and its inhabitants.

The criminal should always be tried first, and executed and/or given a DNR order later. However, if this is proven to be something impossible or too dangerous to carry out, such as during a crisis situation, or if the crime is deemed particularly heinous and the criminal provably guilty beyond any reasonable doubt, trial can be skipped.

H1.14 Do not mindbreak others against their will solely because they have psionic powers. Only do so when the individual is a proven criminal who has either used those powers for crimes after a warning or has used those powers to escape confinement.

Follows rule 0.

H1.15 Do not conduct security business such as searching for or arresting criminals in areas marked by privacy or NSFW holobarriers. No antagonist activity should be conducted in these areas. If you suspect a criminal is misusing these protected areas, ahelp for assistance.

Antagonist Rules:
A1. Follow antagonist guidelines:
A1.1 Antagonists exist to move the round forward and make things interesting and fun for everyone involved. The point is NOT to “greentext” or win over people by pulling every meta trick in the book. The real victory, is in achieving your goals in a fun, interesting, or unique way. As such, “play to win” gameplay void of any roleplay aspect is not only heavily discouraged, but may also lead to negative notes or even suspensions, if deemed to be causing a negative impact on the community and be detrimental to everybody’s fun.

The same of course, is to be applied to roles in opposition to antagonists, such as Security and Command.

We are all here to roleplay, relax and have fun, not to have a competition on who’s the best or the most “robust”. The objectives are meant to be a means to an end, a way to craft and tell a compelling narrative, a fun story for the shift.

A1.2 The damage that antagonists can cause MUST be proportional to their objectives, and contribute towards achieving them in some way.

Round ending levels of damage (plasma/tritium/frezon flooding, atmospherics distro sabotage, singuloose and teslaloose, mass spacing, mass murder, sabotaging or destroying power in an irreparable or extremely difficult to repair manner, etc.) are rarely if ever proportional to most of antagonist objectives (some exceptions for example being nuclear operatives, dragons, or zombies), and rarely anywhere remotely fun. Thus, they should be avoided, unless you got some EXTREMELY good justification and explanation.

Furthermore, after round start, a grace period of 30 minutes is in effect, during which you are not allowed to perform major overt antagonist activities, including theft from secure areas, infrastructure damage, or assaulting your antagonist objective targets.

If you are concerned as to whether or not what you're about to do is allowed, feel free to AHelp and ask an admin for clarification. Lack of administrator response does not constitute approval.

A1.3 Stealth and pacifism are HEAVILY encouraged and to be considered preferable wherever and whenever applicable. If you can get rid of a person without having to round remove them, or obtain an item without having to destroy an entire part of the station, please consider doing so.

A1.4 Round removal is strictly forbidden, outside of situations reasonably demanding it (such as for example, getting rid of a kill objective or getting rid of an unreasonably dangerous, hard to contain threat), or obvious unintended accidents.

A1.5 Antagonists exist not only as a role for your character, but also as a game mechanic. Seek to push forward the round and create a narrative through your antagonistic actions, rather than grind it to halt in pursuit of your objectives and providing zero roleplay to your actions.

A1.6 Other antagonists are not necessarily your friends. Other agents, ninjas, and possibly even space dragons are free agents that you may negotiate with at your own risk. Just because both Nuclear Operatives and Syndicate Agents are on the same team, they don't necessarily have to collaborate, having different goals and instructions.

However of course, do keep in mind that not all antagonist roles can be (easily) reasoned with, such as zombies or cults.

A1.7 Heavily damaging/spacing or camping arrivals/evac/cryo, unnecessarily extending the round, and actions that call the round to an end prematurely (as well as other similarly lame tactics and behaviors), are strictly forbidden.

A1.7.1 Do not intentionally damage dorm areas, or any room with a privacy or NSFW holobarrier on the doorway, if at all possible. Similarly, do not pursue antagonist targets that are in areas behind a privacy or NSFW holobarrier (regardless of door bolt status). If your target is unreachable, remember that you are always free to request a new objective via ahelp.

A1.8 Non-sentient or partially sentient antagonist ghost roles, such as slimes, spiders, snakes, space fauna, xenos (including queens), argocytes, and zombies are expected to have only a limited understanding of space stations and their mechanics, and should not be targeting station infrastructure or intentionally spacing the station.

Non-sentient and partially sentient antagonist creatures MUST be hostile to the crew or at the very least aggressively territorial, unless given cognizine to gain sentience, or granted an exception by admins.

A1.9 Ghost roles have their own independent rules that must be followed, in addition to the already established antagonist guidelines for antagonist ghost roles, and the general game server rules for non-antagonist ones.

As a rule of thumb for ghost roles in general: do not be overly disruptive and a detriment to the fun. You may go on a rampage and kill a lot of people as a dragon because that is what you are meant to do, but do not go out of your way as a mouse or Pun Pun to disturb people's privacy and ERP, or to persistently harass and annoy people or break things for no reason.

Neutral and antagonist ghost roles should not powergame by acting friendly one minute and be hostile the next, the moment a great opportunity presents itself.

A1.10 Neutral or free agent ghost roles, such as skeletons or sentient artifacts, have no pre-defined objectives and thus have the freedom to choose to be hostile or friendly to the crew. However, they are expected not to go too overboard if choosing to be hostile, and limit themselves to being just a nuisance at worst.

Crew are expected to be non-hostile towards neutral and free agent ghost roles until they have proven themselves to be disruptive or hostile.

A1.11 Antagonists are expected to follow their respective antagonist SOP unless they ahelp and were given permission to rule 0.

A1.11.1 Antagonistic ghost roles such as dragon, skia, ninja, deserters, and lone operatives may choose to behave in a non-violent or non-hostile way, to pursue different roleplay scenarios.

However, be aware that while dialogue and compromise is always encouraged, it is strongly encouraged for the crew to act hostile and suspicious within reason, and security is allowed to escalate and take hostile actions to end anything they perceive as a danger, unless a peaceful arrangement has been agreed to and announced to the station.

If an antagonist and the station have come to a peaceful arrangement which has been announced to the station, the relevant ghost role antagonists and station security may no longer engage in antagonistic activities, combat, or hostilities without appropriate roleplay reasons for escalation.

A1.12 Do not conduct or conceal antagonist activity behind the guise of a private scene that would require consent to view. This explicitly includes misleading people through chat, misusing privacy or NSFW holobarriers, hiding or otherwise fleeing into a public area cordoned off by NSFW holobarriers. You may act it out in-character, but clarify in LOOC if you wish to do this as an exclusively IC scenario.

Revision as of 06:28, 8 April 2026

On Space Station 14, stations operate under abbreviated space law. All crew, passengers, and visitors aboard the station are expected to follow these laws.

Foreign invaders, such as nuclear operatives, ninjas, and pirates, are not protected under space law. Traitors are not foreign invaders so they are usually protected by space law.

Designation of 'sentient being' does not automatically grant protections under Space Law. See the Rules of Engagement for what constitutes proper reasoning to instantly terminate a sentient being.

Crimes and Brig Time:

All crime falls into one of three categories:

 • Harm to an Individual: Damage done specifically to individuals or their personal affects.
 • Harm to the Station: Structural damage to the station or it’s company provided assets, espionage, theft of company assets.
 • Harm to the Company: Policy violations, threats to the chain of command, general disorderly conduct.

If a crime does not strictly fall within crime definitions below, but harm has still been done, security may charge with the generic crime of "Harm against [Individual/Station/Company]" with severity that they feel appropriate to the crime, subject to revision by an available Magistrate or Chief Justice.

Security players will never be in OOC trouble for accidentally giving someone less brig time than necessary, as long as sentencing was done in good faith.

Crimes involving sexual content are not listed. This is because no one should ever be involved in a scene that includes that or worse without their explicit consent and they should never have to hear about it if they didn't consent.

Under 25 minutes, or the charges do not include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes. Criminal serves their time as normal in the standard brig, with the maximum sentence being 25 minutes. Released upon the expiration of their timer. The criminal retains their PDA, headset, and all of their original belongings that are not contraband or evidence of a crime, unless they misuse this right.
25 minutes or greater, and the charges do include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes.
40 minutes or greater, and the charges do include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes. A trial must be arranged for the criminal, however, until it is available the criminal is to be held in extended confinement. Headset and PDA should be changed to prisoner variants. Original belongings may be confiscated at the brigging officer's discretion.
60 minutes or greater, and the charges do include any of the following: resisting arrest, recidivism, grand crimes or capital crimes.
Any sentence, if deemed necessary with Magistrate or Captain's Authority The Magistrate or Captain may summarily place the prisoner in permanent confinement or stasis, without trial, if they believe the situation warrants it. A trial will be held after the shift, at Central Command.

This should only be done with uncontainable criminals, overwhelming evidence of grand or capital crimes, or when absolutely necessary for the good of the station. Abusing this authority will have severe repercussions.

If sentenced to Permanent Confinement: Headset and PDA should be changed to prisoner variants. Original belongings may be confiscated at the brigging officer's discretion.

If sentenced to Stasis: The prisoner may simply get into a cryo pod of their own volition if cooperative, or Security may humanely (if possible) sedate or execute the prisoner, and secure them for transport to Central Command.

Pressing Charges:

 • Any crew member may press charges against any other crew member.
 • An individual may be charged of a crime if and only if it can be argued beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused had committed an act in the nature and fashion as described by a particular criminal charge.
 • An individual may not be charged of a crime if the target of the crime explicitly declines to charge them, thus making their charges toward that specific victim void and pardoned in their entirety. This does not apply to crimes that effect the station at large, such as Terrorism, theft in general, and sabotage.
 • Multiple counts of one crime can be charged.
 • For illegal actions against the station abroad, each incident separated by a reasonable period of inaction, lawful conduct, or another crime is interpreted as one count.
 • For crimes directly bereaving a person (violent acts, theft of personal property etc.), the same applies in addition to each victim being one count.
 • In the case of possession or any incident involving several separate and distinct items, only one count of the most severe charge applies.
 • Charges that are a direct escalation of one another in nature cannot be simultaneously held against the perpetrator if they pertain to the same incident and the same victim/item (if applicable). Only the most severe of these charges apply.

The convict may select from one of four methods of execution, depending on availability:

 • Asphyxiation.

If the convict does not make a choice after being given ample opportunity, the sentencing officer or other relevant authority may select the method that is most appropriate.

Convicts may request alternate methods of execution that may be approved or denied at the discretion of the individual passing the sentence. The executed corpse must be burned, stored in the morgue, or processed by medical staff using the biomass reclaimer.
