Nanotrasen. Close to unmatched in its presence within the entirety of settled space, you'd be hard-pressed to find a place that hasn't been touched by this megacorporation. What started as a power company with ties to Electra Dynamic and the solving of the global energy and climate crisis on Terra, nowadays Nanotrasen finds itself at the forefront of power generation, material procurement and refinement, scientific progress and subsidised production of almost every market. They are either named, or behind at least 65% of every other corporations you'll find in space, leaving them as 'The' industry giant to be beaten. With seemingly endless productive power, it's own private military boasting some of the most highly trained and well equipped soldiers in the galaxy, and an effective list of employees comparable to an entire factions worth of space, Nanotrasen dominates the market, especially that of power production through IMS space, and material acquisition.
Given their start as a company focused on electrical power and collaboration, Nanotrasen today still holds echoes of their founding status. Those who work higher in the Nanotrasen sphere, especially those that find themselves in Central Command positions, will often take pride in their work and show unwavering loyalty to the company itself. It's relatively rocky expansion into space and the underhanded deals that got them their helped breed a more reclusive stance in regards to other companies nowadays.
In the search of ever-growing profit margins, Nanotrasen have certainly showed their hand when it comes to a willingness to do whatever possible to achieve their goals. There are several incidents throughout history that have reinforced this message, but the true pin drop was their dividing separation from the Trans-Solar Federation, and their willingness to fund the Martian war of independence. Enforcing a divide between the Martian and the Terran people created a ripple effect throughout the TSF, causing fractures to appear within their governance including the separation of numerous minor factions throughout space.
Political Stance
Being the fundamental backers for the Intergalactic Martian Senate, Nanotrasen have large stakes in the faction. By in large, they played a huge part in its formation during the events of the Martian War for Independence. Regarding that, Nanotrasen is to the Intergalactic Martian Senate in the same way Electra Dynamics is to the Trans-Solarian Federation. Further to these interests, Nanotrasen remained stalwart in their dedication to funding the IMS military, pouring near trillions into the funding of a secretive weapon, which when unveiled, was enough to end the second Martian war just months after it started.
Whilst Nanotrasen isn't explicitly a political power, its mass gives it more political weight than some smaller factions, or solar nations. That, and NT's seemingly unquenchable desire from meddling in the political affairs of the smaller nations, as well as leaning heavily onside of the Intergalactic Martian Senate, has left the company in the position it is in currently. A megacorporation, capable of taking governmental contracts all over space, colonise planets themselves under their own name, and, even lay claim to some areas of space as their own property. Nanotrasen do have governors that work within sectors of planets that they outright own - these planets are considered private land from the company, and due to the size of them, require governmental-esque management - which is provided by Nanotrasen.
Organisational Structure
Due to the size and nature of Nanotrasen, the company simply cannot function off a single operational system. Due to that, it is split into two divided parts. The Intergalactic Hierarchy is the highest form of management within Nanotrasen. Their centralised headquarters resides on Mars itself, and within the HQ one can find the following operational bodies. Beneath that, is the Sector Hierarchy, which is a collection of many Central Command groups, dedicated for the sector that they're set to oversee and work at. These Central Command's often change and have their own unique cultures between sectors.
Intergalactic Hierarchy
Whilst not a single entity, the shareholders board will usually encompass the CEO, as well as the representatives from each company holding the highest shares in Nanotrasen. Nanotrasen itself owns the majority share of 51%, though other companies that own stakes in the company itself send their representatives to the board meetings to oversee and ensure their money is being well spend.
A selection of Nanotrasen's stocks are listed publicly as well, and these are overseen by a constituent representative for each sector that the public may refer to should they wish to invest independently into Nanotrasen
The Board of Directors
CEO
It is the CEO's job to oversee and consider the running of each Central Commander Representative's position. A sector's Central Command is often considered it's own independent entity, though to ensure a cohesive and unified front for Nanotrasen in the intergalactic public eye, the CEO stands as the paragon of the public face, even if people rarely see them.
CFO
As the name would imply (Chief Financial Officer), the CFO is in charge of overseeing and managing the financial status of the company - or at least the team of people that work diligently to ensure the company's finances don't suddenly tank.
CCO
The Chief Commanding Officer's role ensures that operations are correctly managed across the boards directives. It is under their responsibility to action and push information down the stream to each Central Command Representative.
Sector Hierarchy
Central Command
The bureaucratic powerhouse that sits atop Nanotrasen sectors as it's chief branch, Central Command oversees and ensures the smooth running of all Nanotrasen stations, vessels, colonies and sites. Due to the gargantuan size of Nanotrasen, each sector finds itself with a unique Central Command body, built and tailored to specifically handle that sectors sites and work-spaces. Headed by a Central Command Board Representative, Central Command sites are often times perceived as the highest one can rise within the company, or if you're lucky, the most important internship of your life.
The Central Command Board is an internal structure level of Nanotrasen's workings. It is their job to manage sectors at the highest level, and is simply in place due to the gargantuan size of the company itself. They work around the clock to ensure an endless list of factors are overseen and taken care of on a sector to sector basis, and due to the vastly interchangeable cultures across the many sectors of space, each Central Command board is often seen as its own entity within the structure of the company.
Central Command Board Representative
With the gargantuan size of Nanotrasen as a company, it is imperative that the company's internal Central Command is headed, and run by a representative in close proximity to the CEO. Each sector has a de-facto Central Command Representative, who's job it is to report directly upwards the CEO should anything deem their attention. Otherwise, it is on their shoulders to decide what happens, and what is handled within their own sector.
Central Commander
A board headed by a Central Command Representative. The closely knit circle that oversees and ensures the smooth operation of all Nanotrasen sites within a sector. Central Commander's are usually office staff and white collar's - the militant operations and asset protection within a sector is handled by a Central Commander's counter part, their Admiral.
Central Command Admiral
Usually with only one per-sector, a Central Command Admiral falls inline with a Central Commander, however is in charge of any private military operations, and asset protection in the sector. It is their job to oversee Nanotrasen's higher security forces, both secretive and public.
Central Command Agents
Those working closely with Central Commanders, either advisors or office staff, as often referred to as Central Command Agents. This title carries many duties, those who work with it are often given specialisations such as being an Internal Affairs Agent, or an Asset Management Agent. Due to the wide nature of this role, it being inclusive of all from office staff to field agents, the specialisation clarification is vital when carrying ones own ID as to quickly ascertain what it is the agent actually does.
Central Command Internship
Upon entering into a Central Command position, more often than not a prospective agent must undergo an internship with the commanders. Those under internship are highly scrutinized for their position.
Coalition of Captains
The Coalition of Captains was an initiative setup by Nanotrasen to invite those cleared with Captainship of their stations and bases as a council for site level communication. All cleared for Captainship are invited to the meetings to discuss the state of sites across the sector that they work in with Central Commanders.
History
Present Day
Following on from their revolutionary roots in Phoron technology, Nanotrasen nowadays is a different beast to its former self. At its core, the company is a power generation firm, working across space to provide power to the factions, industry and colonies in its operational area. It does this through fleets of stations and planetary outposts across space, all of which are outfitted to hand excess power generated from the stations themselves outwards into the company's Bluespace Power Network.
This is far from the only thing Nanotrasen do nowadays, however. Many of its stations are, whilst outfitted with the ability to supply power to the Nanotrasen Bluespace Power Network, find their focuses more shifted towards research and development, supplying and providing materials to the trade networks, or even providing habitats for many that would wish to live within space, governed more closely with Nanotrasen. Many of the NT stations throughout IMS space are even contracted by the IMS Director of the Future in regards to future technology research, especially the stations close enough to interact with the Noosphere.
The Founding
In the mid 21th century, the generation of clean electricity was a key requirement for continued life on Earth. The world was transitioning into nuclear power solutions, something that would solve the energy crisis, and the intrepid Jack F Hayden saw the rise as it was coming. Splitting off from the company he'd already been with, Hayden saw it upon himself to invest what he had saved into founding a more efficient and safe nuclear power solution. Part of this investment came from a recent breakthrough in nuclear power which allowed Hayden to push for a groundbreaking new design for a nuclear reactor.
Within a few years of his registration of his new company, Nanotrasen, he'd managed to open the first nuclear powerplant using this design. It proved, as was written, to be the best, most efficient, and incredible development of the 21st century. The first Nanotrasen site was constructed in Central Europe, pulling the attention of the local powers quite quickly and bringing Hayden almost immediate international fame in the scientific and power community. Investments were huge, government were reaching out faster than he could respond, but the biggest e-mail he received was from the current leading company in power; Electra Dynamics. An offer was made to purchase the technology from Hayden for more than all the governments were offering him, and more, yet in that moment the first leading CEO of Nanotrasen made the decision to hold the technology close to his chest, though offer a diplomatic response.
The Global Power Initiative
Seeing a chance to grow the company further, Hayden proposed a solution to Electra that invited them to grow together. The Global Power Initiative would serve to be the first true handshake Nanotrasen made, as it produced them a share of Terra's power requirements. The Initiative was heralded as the true beginning to Terra's utopic future, providing a ground-layer for the unification of Terra's superpowers - and the birth of the United Government of Terra. The UGT would serve as a final-point unifying force for the planet, and steered humanity on Terra towards the golden age growth. It took only 30 years for the majority of the planet to be powered under the GPI, with Nanotrasen coming out just ontop, holding a majority of 38% of the planets power supply, with Electra just behind them at 35%. This led to 73% of the planets power being produced by just two companies, and immediately skyrocketed Nanotrasen into becoming one of the most power and influential companies on the planet. At its peak, the GPI solidified a strong and powerful alliance between Electra Dynamics and Nanotrasen - one that many thought would continue forever.
At this point, Hayden was reaching retirement, and needed a focus for the company for when he was gone. Looking to the stars, he begged the question with his board - and promised that Nanotrasen would become the first company to work between planets. He set Mars in his sights, after previous ventures there had deemed it nothing more than a dead planet and tourist spot.
Onto Mars
Nanotrasen signed a deal with an upcoming lunar-travel firm, to consign a deal to create a colony ship to Mars. Investing much of their money from the GPI, as well as getting a contract with the UGT themselves, Nanotrasen produced a ship capable of travelling to mars, and landing a colonies worth of people there with the supplies needed to build the first colony of Mars. Their task was to investigate Mars with far more intimacy than before, searching and seeking for anything on the planet that could be worth their visit - as if starting the first true colony there wasn't enough. After arrival, it didn't take long for Laika's Rest, the first Martian colony, to flourish and grow - and it fell under Nanotrasen management, becoming the first settlement of Terra on Mars, as well as the first settlement owned and governed by a company. After only twelve years, however, Nanotrasen made its first under-crust drill of Mars, exposing something that would forever change their future underneath. Oceans of a brand new element lay beneath the Martian crust, and Nanotrasen had just been the first to find it.
This purple, viscous, hotter-than-lava element became the focal point of Nanotrasen's Martian excursion - however, in an effort to cornerstone it before others discovered it, they kept it quiet. Various other sites on Mars had popped up since Nanotrasen's colony had properly settled - and in the companies interest, Nanotrasen did not want them discovering this new element as well. One site in particular, a powersite Electra had sent to Mars to assist the Nanotrasen colony, was one the company wished to avoid. This didn't last, however, and just five years into the research of this new element - one that Nanotrasen had named Phoron - Electra Dynamics discovered it themselves in the hands of Nanotrasen. It was a sheer accident, a shipment gone wrong, but it was enough for Electra to secretly begin investigating this element themselves. Nanotrasen had no idea that their new element had just leaked to Electra, and in a feat of ultimate company conspiracy, Electra had no intentions of telling them.
Electra-Nanotrasen Cold War
Electra's investigation of this new element turned up similar results to Nanotrasen. It was hot, it could burn more efficiently than almost anything else, it was safe to handle and non-radioactive when it was solid, and it had an incredibly amount of calorie-per-gram. Electra turned towards what they knew best, power generation. They began work immediately on attempting to discover what they could do with this new element, managing to secretly create a siphon on Nanotrasen's supply. Nanotrasen on the other hand, saw the potential burn power of this element, and turned to the very same company that had landed them on Mars. At the same time, they had managed to stabilise the very first Phoron power cell, and their future was looking perfect. Upon the creation of the Phoron power cell, and in order to keep the heat off themselves, Nanotrasen turned back to Terra and invested in a brand new cybernetics startup - Cybersun Incorporated. They brought the company out, handed them the technology in secret, signed them under sworn and almost militant secrecy, and instructed them to find what they could do with a portable power cell of their brand new element. To ensure nothing was to far amiss, the acquisition of Cybersun was done almost entirely off of the books, an act that would later land the smaller subsidiary in hot water at Nanotrasen's fault.
With these two companies working alongside Nanotrasen, the future of Phoron was in their hands. Electra aimed to beat them to it - and wanted to launch their own product with it. Electra had been investigating generators, and power suppliers that they could manufacture or create with Phoron in its different forms. It didn't take long for them to create a brand new form of gas engine, the Phoron Cycled Thermoelectric Generator - or PC-TEG for short. Unbeknownst to them, it was a technology they and everyone else would use incorrectly for years to come - due to their desire to burn it so hot with Phoron.
At the height of this all - Nanotrasen managed to perfect their new Phoron based engine, a ship engine capable of performing skip jumps at near-to light travel using the long burning combination of Oxygen and Phoron, the PO-202. By today's standards, an interstellar engine using Phoron as it's fuel would be seen as entirely inefficient and even dangerous, though at the time, this breakthrough was a key turning point for the future of Terran kind. With Nanotrasen done with their new engine, as well as the Phoron power cell, they were ready to reveal their findings to the world. Off the back of this, they had planned to use the traction itself to prove Mars' worth as an independent nation unde rtheir own governance, however Electra's own spies had discovered the release date for themselves and so, naturally, they scheduled the release of their PC-TEG for a two days before.
Progress day!
It had been a few years since the discovery of Phoron, and NT had thought themselves to have something unique, and so when Electra's own reveal day came around and the PC-TEG was shown off to the world just two days before Nanotrasen plan to announce that Phoron even existed in the first place, there was a clear rift cut between the companies. Electra didn't take complete ownership. fabricating a strange story of how Nanotrasen had infact shipped them Phoron themselves and that this new element had to be stabilised before it was revealed to the world. The reveal of the PC-TEG became a world shaking moment, this brand new and far more efficient source of power threatened to change the worlds reliance on Nuclear energy, and as such, the GPI. Nanotrasen scrambled to reveal their engine the following day, but found themselves overshadowed by the PC-TEG, finally putting Electra Dynamics back in the forefront of the power trade.
It's unsure exactly what transpired in the subsequent board meeting that housed both CEO's the following day, though when it was done, an agreement had been drawn. Electra would provide a PC-TEG to Mars for Laika's Rest, and NT would provide a small number of PO-202's back. Nanotrasen did however manage to wrestle ownership of the Phoron fields under Mars within this deal, still ensuring they had control of all currently mineable Phoron fields. The CEO was also seen making a call directly after the board meeting, the contents of this call carrying the removal of Cybersun as a subsidery of NT. Since there was no proper or even legal documentation of the acquisition, Cybersun had next to no leg to stand on in reply to the statement and it left the company quite deep in the lurch, almost outright killing it. Electra began producing its PC-TEG's as on ground replacements for other GPI sites around the global, slowly phasing out the Uranium power supplies that NT continued to run. To this day, there are still Nuclear power plants on Terra founded by NT, though their contribution to the power saturation of the planet is no longer the majority. Slowly, Nanotrasen's relevancy on Terra was chipped away at, whilst their strength on Mars was growing.
